The body needs vitamin C for this
Vitamin C is certainly one of the most well-known vitamins and is needed by the body in many ways. On the one hand, it is involved in many metabolic processes, but at the same time it also supports the healthy development of bones, teeth and connective tissue. Furthermore, it can ward off harmful compounds, which primarily include free radicals, but also reactive oxygen species. Vitamin C also has positive effects on digestion. Here, for example, it ensures that iron, which is often contained in plant-based foods, can be utilized better.
Vitamin C deficiency is extremely rare today
A vitamin C deficiency is rarely found anymore, especially in western countries. It was previously particularly associated with scurvy, also known as sailors' disease. But vitamin C deficiencies can also occur in infants. In this case it is Moeller-Barlow disease, which affects both growth and bone formation. The associated symptoms are diverse and range from joint pain to infections and problems with wound healing.
What deficiency symptoms are there?
If there is a vitamin C deficiency, this can manifest itself through various symptoms. However, this often only occurs when the defect has existed for some time. In addition to fatigue and weak connective tissue, depression in particular can be associated with such a deficiency. Whether the symptoms are really the result of a vitamin C deficiency should always be determined clinically. In this case, nutritional supplements can really help counteract the deficiency. Complaints such as pain in the joints and muscles usually only occur when the deficiency has persisted for months.
